WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden awarded the Medal of Honor to Capt. Larry Taylor on Tuesday, honoring the Army pilot who risked his life during the Vietnam War by flying into heavy enemy
Baker was the only living recipient at the time of the ceremony. As of November 2019, the most recent African-American service member to receive the Medal of Honor was Marine Sgt. Major John L. Canley for his actions during the Battle of Hue in January-February 1968 in the Vietnam War.

The Medal of Honor for the Department of the Army was established July 12, 1862 by President Abraham Lincoln, who signed it into law. It is our nationʼs highest medal for valor in combat that can be awarded to members of the armed forces. To date, there have been 77 West Point graduates who have received this medal.
