The E46 M3 6-speed gearbox is literally a "bolt in" for the E36 as the engine mounting points are shared, both the E36 S52 motor (and all other previous M50 iterations) and the E46 M3 S54 are identical in that respect. With the exception of the driveshaft, all other conversion parts are available directly from BMW and/or quality aftermarket

The Engine and Transmission. An LS1 and T56 from a 2002 Camaro SS with 90k miles purchased off eBay for $4000. I chose this combo because it makes plenty of power and has the accessory drive and oil pan that seems to work best. The only modifications at this time are a Lingenfelter GT2-3, LS7 clutch, and Hurst shifter.

Getting S52 and M3 trans torn apart. Cleaning trans and oil pan. Threw dab of ultra-grey at timing case-to-block joints. Cleaning oil pump nut/torqueing and tacking. Placed a small tack with Er70s filler rod. Oil Pan all buttoned up with nee Oil Check tube o-ring.
6. My Cars. BMW E36, e46, e90. The e92 M3 six speed manual trans will fit. I currently have one in my e36 with the s65 engine. I had to shorten the driveshaft but no big deal. Circling back to the reason for an S65 instead of something else, there are a couple of reasons. Electronics compatibility is a big one. As Jim mentioned the pre LCI cars run EWS3 and the S65 runs EWS4. That's something that I think you could get past, and save the integrity of the OEM instrumentation.
There are three options here. The first is to use the transmission that came with your donor engine, like a ZF 5-speed with the S52. The second is to adapt a different transmission, like a CD009 from a 350z, by using a bell housing adapter designed to mate that transmission to your engine of choice.
