Backstabs are the core punish mechanic of the game, It's personally my favourite thing about Dark Souls, the backstab meta game has more depth than anything in the sequels for me. If you're not big on backstab focused gameplay maybe try flip CB which focuses on whiff punish and out spacing your opponent.

I am certain on what I have said though. However consider that with the nuance of difference between the backstab attack animations of the dagger and straight sword, the times where one would whiff and not work and the other actually would work would probably be incredibly few anyways.

I call it "Game Journalist Mode", because even a game journalist can play DS3 with this build. Let me break it down for you in 5 simple steps. Step 1 - Acquire Chaos Dagger and Witchtree Branch. When wielding a weapon with both hands, you will block instead of parrying. While holding a Bow with both hands, L1: Toggle sniper mode. Aim with the Right Analog Stick and move slowly with the Left Analog Stick. Up and Down D-pad arrows will zoom in or out, respectively. Sniper mode is not usable with crossbows.
